Kinematic analysis of goal-directed movements in ball catching

Intercepting a moving object, for example when catching a ball, poses a challenge for the catcher, because the final interception point is not a fixed, predefined position. In order to intercept the ball successfully, the catcher has to guide the hand based on temporal and spatial estimations of future positions by judging the position, velocity and gravitational acceleration of the ball (López-Moliner et. al., 2010).
The question, how the catcher guides the hand in order to intercept an object, is explained by different control strategies. Most prominent in this field are the concepts of predictive and prospective control. Predictive control assumes, that movements are pre-programmed before executed, while prospective control asserts that movement planning is up-dated continuously (Dessing et. al., 2005).
My research focuses on an analysis of goal-directed movements in ball catching, with the aim to assess movement planning under under changing sensori-motor conditions. Therefore I use primarily kinematics to calculate and analyze movement executions.
