Matt Mullican sculpture: Ceremonial inauguration in the courtyard of the Pharmacampus

On Thursday 14 October 2021, the ceremonial inauguration of the restored and reinstalled sculpture project "Untitled (Sculpture for the Chemical Institutes)" by Matt Mullican took place in the large courtyard of the Pharmacampus. For the 1987 Sculpture Projects, Matt Mullican (* 1951) conceived the large-scale floor sculpture "Untitled (Sculpture for the Chemical Institutes)". At the time, the artist chose an intimate location between three buildings of the chemical institutes of Münster University. On the green space, he laid a floor relief made of square granite slabs. In the middle of the work, the artist left a square free of signs and shapes. Since the work was installed, weather and time have caused the floor slabs to age over 30 years. Likewise, the constellation and functions of the buildings on site have changed: A new research building moved next to the artwork and in the coming years more buildings will be demolished and the current site redeveloped. Due to these extensive urban developments, the museum and the university worked with the artist to find a new location for the sculpture. The PharmaCampus, which was created in 2013, was chosen. The physical proximity to the laboratories makes the reference to the work processes of the employees visible again and re-establishes the local reference to the chemical institutes.
