Today I would like to draw your attention to two further events taking place in June:
1. Lecture by Prof Dr Stefanie Haberzettl, Saarland University: 'Einsatz des Serious Game "Wuschel" zur Sprachstandsermittlung bei Vorschulkindern'. Monday, 24 June, 4-6 p.m. in the Festsaal (Schlossplatz 5).
2. Psycholinguistic Workshop, Friday, 14 June - Saturday, 15 June in the northern Kavaliershäuschen, Schlossplatz 6. The workshop programme can be found in the appendix. Colleagues are very welcome and are also welcome to come to individual lectures only. However, as this is an internal workshop, it is possible that the schedule may occasionally be delayed by a few minutes.

Peter Hagoort is emeritus director of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and the founding director of the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging. He is professor in cognitive neuroscience at the Radboud University Nijmegen. His research interests relate to the human language faculty and how it is instantiated in the brain.Abstract
In the course of evolution homo sapiens has been equipped with a brain that enables communication through natural language. This complex language faculty has been cobbled together out of systems for processing sound, sequences and symbols. I will discuss the multitude of brain networks supporting our language skills. I will show the dynamics of language processing, and forms of neural plasticity to adapt to requirements of different languages. Finally, I will argue that for language and communication interaction with other cognitive systems is required.
2. As part of the lecture series organised by the research project "Dialektatlas Mittleres Westdeutschland (DMW)", a series of lectures on "Challenges in dealing with dialectal/regiolectal variation in language atlas projects", two lectures will take place this semester.

We would like to draw your attention to the event "»Exotic« Westphalia: August Erdland and Colonialism", which will take place on Sunday, 21 April 2024, from 15:00 at Haus Rüschhaus (Am Rüschhaus 81, 48161 Münster). The 90-minute event will begin with a botanical tour through the garden of Haus Rüschhaus with biologist and journalist Alexandra Hostert. This will be followed by a dialogue reading with literary scholar Walter Gödden and actor Carsten Bender, who will provide insights into the life of a missionary who became increasingly critical of colonialism. At the end, students from an accompanying master's seminar will offer insights into Erdland's language descriptions. Postcolonial Westphalia-Lippe" and the Sparkasse Münsterland Ost Foundation.

Monday, 29 April 2024, 4 pm:
Kyle Parrish (Goethe University Frankfurt): "A case for case studies in L3 research: a simulation of L3 VOT production"
The lecture will take place at the Institute of Linguistics, Room AE 11, Aegidiistraße 5, 48143 Münster.
Abstract: In the last few decades, there has been increasing discussion surrounding third language (L3) acquisition, in which a range of studies have been carried out across linguistic domains, including (morpho)syntax and phonetics and phonology. One key debate in the field surrounds whether the L3 is influenced in a wholesale fashion by either an L1 or L2 (Rothman, 2015), or whether it can be simultaneously influenced by both of these known languages (Westergaard et al., 2017). While both of these views have received empirical support, it is unclear whether studies supporting whole language transfer have had sufficient statistical power to detect (likely) relevant effects, given their relatively low numbers of participants. The statistical power of a study refers to the probability that an effect (which actually exists) is detected. Any given effect (such as a mean difference) is more difficult to detect when there is greater variation in a data set. This variation can come from at least three sources: the variation caused by sampling of different experimental items, the variation caused by sampling random participants from an underlying population, and random error. Using simulation, and VOT as a hypothetical outcome variable, the present work systematically manipulates the number and variation in participants and items, while taking random error into account, in order to make specific recommendations for necessary and numbers of participants and stimuli on the basis the proportion of the expected variation relative to a given effect. Ultimately, It is argued that low sample or case studies could be an advantageous avenue for L3 studies to consider, since it removes the factor of individual variation from the equation.

29.01.23, 4 pm:Constantijn Kaland (University of Cologne): "Contour clustering as a solid start for intonation analyses."
The lecture will take place in the Institute for Linguistics, Room AE 11, Aegidiistraße 5, 48143 Münster.
Abstract:
"It is a challenge to understand the form-meaning relationship in f0
contours. Traditional (auto-segmental metrical) analyses are not
seldomly applied to highly stylized laboratory speech, which leaves a
gap in explaining f0 movements found in more naturalistic speech and
often requires (learning) an annotation system. This also provides a
threshold to do intonation analysis on underdescribed languages. The
present demonstration proposes an exploratory workflow with the same aim
of finding prototypical - i.e. phonologically underlying - contours. The
approach is suitable for field recordings of any type and essentially
requires only segmentation (additional annotation is helpful, though).
The tool performs cluster analysis on time-series f0 data and provides
the user with multiple ways of finding the optimal number of clusters.
There are no principled restrictions to the language, the amounts of
data, or the speech unit under investigation to obtain sensible results.
Although more analysis is needed to come to phonological descriptions,
contour clustering offers a fully data-driven and reproducible basis for
further hypothesizing and testing in production and perception tasks."

On Monday, July 3, 2023, Ms. Miriam Neuhausen from the University of Freiburg will speak at 10:15 a.m. in ES 202 in the English Seminar on the topic "We have an accent when we talk English, I know we do": Sociophonetic variation in Pennsylvania German English in southern Ontario, Canada. A poster for the guest lecture is also attached.
The guest lecture will also take place in hybrid form, so that participation via Zoom is also possible.

Research Day: Formen und Funktionen von Sprache. Didaktische Konzeptionen und Perspektiven für mehr Linguistik in der Schule
If you are working on a doctoral project in the field of German linguistics that addresses issues at the interface with German language didactics, you are warmly invited to participate in the Nachwuchstag "Formen und Funktionen von Sprache. Didaktische Konzeptionen und Perspektiven für mehr Linguistik in der Schule" on Sept. 21, 2023, as part of the Summer School for Education Students at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Invitations are extended to doctoral students whose projects are still in their early stages and have a work-in-progress character, as well as to doctoral students who would like to present projects in advanced stages. Linguistic topics from the fields of graphematics, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics are welcome, as long as they are clearly related to linguistic didactics or school practice. References to first and second language acquisition are welcomed as well. The dissertation projects can be presented and discussed in the form of posters in a poster session. The best poster will receive an award.

Der linguistische Studierendenkongress „Linkon” unter der Leitung von Dr. Netaya Lotze geht in die nächste Runde! Zum achten Mal richten das Germanistische Institut und der Fachbereich 09 (Philologie) die Tagung aus. Dazu laden wir Sie alle sehr herzlich ein. Studentinnen des Masters „Empirische und Angewandte Sprachwissenschaft” geben in Fachvorträgen Einblicke in die aktuelle linguistische Forschung. Neben Vorträgen zu gegenwärtigen Diskursen wie Body Shaming oder Corona erwarten Sie unter anderem auch Fragestellungen zu Phänomenen aus der Dialektologie oder Psycholinguistik. Dabei sein lohnt sich: Wir freuen uns auf Prof. Dr. Florian Busch der Universität Bern und seinen spannenden Gastvortrag. Dieser wird die Rolle von Zeitlichkeit in der digitalen Interaktion behandeln.

The lecture by Prof. Dr. Eva-Maria Thüne on "Sprachverlust, Spracherhaltung und Mehrsprachigkeit in Sprachbiographien von Kindern des Kindertransports (1938/39)" has to be postponed. It will now take place on 18.07.2022 in the time of 9:00-12:30 st in room VSH 118 (Schlossplatz 34).
The lecture will be followed by a colloquium with various data sessions on language biographical data. Everyone is cordially invited to attend.
